Past Monthly Tips
JULY
July is the second hottest month of the year. We sell a lot of Amurs this time of year, as the vegetation is growing very well.
To try to kill weeds and algae when water temperatures are high is very risky. Using Amurs is the safe way.
Fishing is probably not the best right now as warm water will also affect fishing. Warm water forces the bigger fish to deeper, cooler water.
You should also be seeing the results of this year's hatch of all the species that are in the pond.
We have begun to handle a couple of new products from Crystal Blue Premium Aquatic Chemicals. The Crystal Blue Colorant will give your pond or lake that pretty blue color and will also block sunlight helping the Amurs to control weeds.
Natural Pond Cleaner is a bacteria that will help to consume dead plant buildup and that black muck that comes from years of dead leaves and plants.
I have watched one of our feed mill customers sell the bacteria for the past two years to see what kind of results their customers would have. So far, the results have been very good. We now carry both the Colorant and Bacteria to be used in conjunction with Amurs and Koi.

Minnows help eat away mosquito threat is an article in USA Today written by Tina Irgang. She state:
"Communities in states from New York to California are fighting
mosquitoes by giving away free minnows to residents with ponds,
pools or other standing water, all good breeding grounds for the
unwelcome insects.
MID-MAY
We have started to
collect Bass Fry to put in our brood ponds to raise out for
fingerlings. The Blue Gill are on the spawning beds and the Crappie
breeders have dropped eggs. Every species except Catfish have begun,
or have already finished spawning.
If you feed your
fish with pellets, now is a good time to start, if you haven't
already.
We now stock
Moultrie Fish Feeders in the 6.5 and 30 gallon sizes. Call and ask
for Steve for pricing, or call him direct at 740-502-5454. These
feeders will let you feed even when you can't be there to do it.
Crappie and Trout
sales will be discontinued until next fall due to the warm water
temperatures.
If your pond is
overrun with algae and weeds, contact us about White Amur. 8 to 12
of these per acre will fix your problems. It's the cheapest and best
way to control weeds.
APRIL and MAY
This is the time of year we receive calls from pond owners
concerning adult bluegill. They either find sick or dead bluegill in
the pond.
Bacterial disease is common all year, but will be more of a problem
in the spring because the bluegill are weak from a long winter.
The cure:
Treat with one pound of copper sulfate per acre of surface water.
Dilute the copper sulfate in some water before applying. One
treatment should solve the problem.
